How I Drew Wise Owl

I usually do a painting as an end of year gift for my daughters teacher. I was tipped off that the teacher loves owls so I decided to have a go and see what I could come up with.

I decided to use charcoal as I wanted to have some of it blending. I wanted the eyes to be the main focus so I had to be careful not to smudge it. I did a time lapse video just in case it did work out so you can see how I built it up.

To start with I do a layer of charcoal and blend it in to get the soft out of focus effect. This will be mid range in tonal value so that I can work in darker tones and create details. Baring in mind areas which I want to be left white. You may notice in the video I rub out the owls beak as it was positioned wrong and correct then correct it.

I bought a black frame with a white mount (A4) and made sure it was going to fit nicely within the mount. A drawing like this I would aim to start and finish in one session.
